Grants to Massachusetts organizations and individuals for programs and projects related to arts and culture, humanities, and the interpretive sciences in eligible regions. Funding is intended to support a variety of projects, including musical and theatrical performances, the creation of public works of art, art, science and nature educational programs, scientific or natural exhibits, and the documentation of Westport history through books, video or photography. Programs and projects should take place Westport.

The Westport Cultural Council will give priority to grant requests that:

  • Directly involve the arts, interpretive sciences or humanities.
  • Take place on the South Coast, or promote local creative talent or cultural resources.
  • Have a measurable impact on the Westport community, by reaching a significant number of Westport residents, whether immediately, or over time.
  • Engage, and help bring together, Westport's varied communities, or introduce Westport residents to new or different cultural perspectives.
  • Do not duplicate existing programs or funding.

Term of Contract:

Projects are expected to be completed within one year of receipt of grant.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Individuals as well as organizations are encouraged to apply.

Programs that take place outside of Westport may be eligible. If a program is proposed that occurs in a nearby community the application must describe how the program will benefit residents of Westport and provide information on how the applicant will engage and inform the Westport community.

The Helen Ellis grant does not reimburse for consumable food items.

Pre-Application Information:

Applications will be accepted starting February 1, 2020, and must be submitted by Friday, March 20, 2020 (or postmarked by March 20, 2020, if mailed). Notification will occur May 2020. Programs can be scheduled to begin anytime after May 1, 2020, and must be completed by April 30, 2021.

The Westport Cultural Council will send notification to all applicants shortly after they vote on grants.

Money is dispensed on a reimbursement basis only.
