On The Road With GrantWatch

SERRC

Julie Staley

Executive Director

A conversation between Julie Staley, the executive director of SERRC, and Libby Hikind, the founder and CEO of GrantWatch.com.

Hi, I am Libby Hikind, the founder and CEO of GrantWatch.com. And we are here in Juneau, Alaska, meeting with nonprofits and businesses that have gotten grants on GrantWatch and seeing what their tips are for grant writing and for grant funding. And I am here today with Julie Staley.

Q: What does your nonprofit do?

A: I am the executive director at SERRC. So, SERRC is the Southeast Regional Resource Center. It is an educational nonprofit here in Alaska. It was set up in 1976, with the Alaska State Legislature in response to a variety of laws, particularly around special education, that were introduced in the 1970s.

Q: How has GrantWatch helped your organization?

A: Last year, Joan (a co-worker) was looking through where she subscribed to GrantWatch. And as she was doing this process, she came across the Golden Valley Electric Association, and she applied for that grant. SERRC was awarded $7,500. The area that they work in is Fairbanks, I believe. And so, Joan's program is decathlon and pentathlon in this state. She contacted the Golden Valley Electric Association, and they were very generous in their donation. And we were able to use that funding source to be able to support the students in the academic decathlon program within their service region.

Q: What is your advice to grant seekers?

A: I have worked at SERRC for 32 years and I have written a number of grants in 32 years.

Q: So, what would your tips be to people looking to write grants or find grants?

A: We definitely look through the internet. Just to see people who have similar missions and visions to what we have... what area are they working in? What is their vision and mission? Does it align with SERRC’s mission? And then, we would go from there and reach out.
